Within this series of prints, I set out to expand on a self portrait project, and ended up with a test of memory and recollection. I set out to execute a series of portraits of people from my home. I ended up with seven prints which represent five people I’ve known my entire life, who I’ve interacted with my entire life.
The imagery in each plate is constructed entirely from memory - every object, every face. As I worked I began to write about these people. Anecdotes, or traits I see in them. Stories and interactions.
The rules of the project were simple:
The only source I could use was my own memory. I was not allowed to alter the plates once the drawings were done. After printing the series, I allowed myself to go in and add writing and drawing, making five unique editions.
Elements of memory but also stream of consciousness were brought into the prints. In the end, each print remains inaccurate and incomplete in representing each of these beautifully complex people.
Each is seen through the lens of my memories, consciousness, and experience - limiting the truth of them as a whole while still being entirely truthful to who they are to me.
